“Omnishambles”: 2021’s Word of the Year?

There’s always a bit of a fun game that comes toward the end of the year, with the selection of a Word of the Year. Previous years have highlighted words like “doomscrolling” or “fake news” or “Brexit” – words that really call out ideas, insights or themes that defined that year. Looking back at 2021, what will you be nominating?

As we’re inching towards the close of 2021, let’s have a bit of fun and reflect somewhat on what word our Org-ology friends might designate as the word that best describes 2021. What vocabulary have you been seeing? What ideas keep popping up? As Org-ology, what would you select as the Word of the Year?

The summer of sports’ mental health

Even if you’re not a sports person, it’s been quite a summer for interesting developments in sports. 

Wimbledon, the Olympics and the 2020 Euro Cup all had some interesting commonalities no one really expected.

If you paid no attention to the Tokyo Olympics whatsoever, you did catch the drama created by the press, and others, about Simone Biles stepping back from competition due to mental health issues.

When you look at Wimbledon and the 2020 Euro Cup, that theme surfaces again. 

Who knew there are things aside from the pandemic to think about?

There’s that old John Lennon quote, life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans. We seem to have spent much of 2020, and too much of 2021 making other plans.

So, what’s on the horizon that we should be paying attention to, that’s lost focus over the last year or so?

Please don’t make me work stupid: back to the office?

A while back, Apple’s Tim Cook sent a memo to all staff saying he missed the pitter-patter of tiny feet in his office.

So is it time to pull the plug on remote working and ask your teams to return to the office? Or, should Tim Cook get a cat?
